Highland County 3-20-2010
Larry and Harley led a ride to Highland County on the first day of spring, 2010 on the last weekend of the Maple Sugar Festival. Five or six of us left Sheetz in Waynesboro, then we met 4 or 5 more in Churchville.
It was a beautiful day, one of the best we've had this spring. Great day for a cruise through the mountains.
Once to McDowell, we stopped at the school for pork rinds, then moved on to the Sugar Tree Country Store. Crowds were huge, parking was a challenge, and of course lines were long.
The deal is that they make the donuts under the tent on the right. You stand in a line for 30 minutes or so to pay for the donuts, or brunswick stew or water and other food, they give you a number and you wait an hour or more for your number to come up.
As we wait, (see the guy in the red holding a pink slip of paper - that''s the donut number) a dog and his boy attract attention. Once the hours past and we retrieved the coveted donuts, which by the way are outstanding, we decided not to go on to Monterrey. We heard from others, as we had plenty of time to visit waiting for donuts, that the traffic was so thick it was stopped three miles out of Monterrey. We figured that we prefered waiting here than straddling our bikes halfway down the mountain. So eventually we motored home through WVA, then across the hill on 33, thru Harrisonburg and home.

After a stop at Sheetz, (Larry is considering a Sheetz tour - maybe if we hit 50 of them, they'll give us a free tank of gas...) and dropping off riders as we got closer to home, this smiling group headed off into the sun... it was a great ride and hopefully a harbinger of the pretty weather and more rides to come!
One last thing about this ride. A guy riding with us for the first time noted that he'd heard this was an eating group but we never stopped for a meal...thought maybe he'd heard wrong? Well no, this is an eating group and we'll have to make it up to him on the next ride! We can't get the reputation that we miss a meal!!!
